University of Applied Sciences Rhein-Waal is taking an extra step to increase safety in the school

Students and staff could not be evacuated quickly or easily.

About the university of applied sciences:

Hochschule Rhein-Waal was founded in 2009 and is located in the German city of Kleve, it also has a second campus in Kamp-Lintfort. In order to raise the safety level to a higher level, Heinz Lippe is introducing an evacuation mattress at the Hogeschool.

The problem

In the event of an emergency at Rhein Waal – such as a fire – it could happen that students or employees with reduced mobility are unable to descend quickly. Just imagine: you have to evacuate, the elevator fails and there is another student in a wheelchair on the 3rd floor. In such a situation you need trained employees or people who are extremely strong to bring / lift the less mobile person to a safe environment.

But what if such a trained or strong person is not present and you have to act immediately?

Safety manager Heinz Lippe from Hochschule Rhein-Waal says: “We have always used so-called ‘carry slings’ within our organization to evacuate people with reduced mobility. The disadvantages of this tool are clear: it is uncomfortable and difficult to use.” Heinz Lippe continues: “Therefore, we were looking for an evacuation solution that could be used by one person.”

The solution

The ideal solution for the University of Applied Sciences was presented to Heinz by colleagues from Tetcon… And thus the evacuation mattress S-CAPEPLUS. This evacuation device was developed precisely for problems that the Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences also encountered. It is quick and easy to use and reduces the likeliness of leaving someone behind. It is also economical to purchase. Heinz Lippe, who himself has tested the evacuation mattress S-CAPEPLUS, explains: “Thanks to its practical features, this evacuation mattress can even be used by one person. Of course several responders is better, but when in doubt, one person is sufficient. Moreover, “the victim” is always safe and he / she can be evacuated both vertically and horizontally. “

The result

The evacuation mattress has even been used in an emergency within the University of Applied Sciences. “That was hassle-free, safe and even comfortable for the person on the mattress,” explains Heinz Lippe. “We faced a power outage in the building and the elevator stopped working, one of our employees was trapped on the second floor with a wheelchair. We decided to use the S-CAPEPLUS to bring our colleague downstairs. This was no problem at all and it only took a few minutes ”, Heinz Lippe concludes. Hochschule Rhein-Waal invested in dozens of evacuation mats. The model they chose is the S-CAPEPLUS Basic Model in green Wall Cover with German print.
